équipbaie métalexpo 2010 équipbaie métalexpo 2010

State of play, 1st September

As expected, many companies have confirmed their participation in the show later than in previous years. July therefore saw a number of new bookings, taking the number of exhibitors to 305, and in the end the 2010 show should attract over 320 exhibitors, with 15 to 20 bookings being expected in September and October.

More than ever, the event for the roller blind industry, this year équipbaie métalexpo sees the return of Bubendorff, together with the majority of the market’s big names.

In international terms, Italy continues to be the most heavily represented country, occupying an area of 1,800 m2, ahead of Germany (1,600 m2), Spain (1,000 m2) and Belgium (1,000 m2). Many manufacturers who are market leaders in these countries make équipbaie métalexpo their key event for the French market.

The “50 years of steel architecture in Europe” exhibition at équipbaie métalexpo

The exhibition “50 years of steel architecture in Europe” has been created to accompany the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the European Convention for Constructional Steelwork. Founded in 1955, this institution brings together professional organizations from 25 European countries.

Intended for both the general public and professionals, this exhibition presents a selection of buildings and works of art in which steel plays a starring role that have been constructed over the last 50 years in Europe. The examples chosen illustrate the variety of the architecture and the types of steel structure, demonstrate the different scales on which they have been realized and present the evolution of the trends and techniques.

It includes both the large steel structures that have marked out the half century, as well as other less well known ones that have made a significant impact during this period. Each example is presented in the form of a large photograph, often taken at the time of the construction, together with a description.

A selection of 37 outstanding projects to be discovered at équipbaie métalexpo 2010.

Mobil’Hand for an environment accessible to all

This year équipbaie métalexpo welcomes A2H (Atelier Handicap Habitat), an association based at the Montpellier school of architecture, which is presenting a hands on educational trail that offers a direct experience of the principal everyday obstacles faced by a person with a sensory or motor handicap.

Various different forms of handicap are simulated (wheelchair, with a mask imitating visual impairment or blindness, etc.) and the subject then has to navigate obstacles such as:

  • in the street: pavements, soils, gratings, note and ticket dispensers, different widths of passage...
  • indoors: corridors, counters, work surfaces...

This fun trail will allow able-bodied persons to gain an awareness of situations that the handicapped face, raising the awareness not just of construction professionals but also students who will soon be joining the professional world. The objective of A2H is to improve the quality of use and the architectural quality of spaces and buildings for the good of all.

There are 2 trails:

  • Mobil’Hand 1, created by Ankel Cérèse (today an architect and accessibility consultant) designed to raise awareness amongst the population at large.
  • Mobil’Hand 2 is the work of students at vocational colleges in the Languedoc-Roussillon region and has subsequently been adapted by the French educational authorities to raise awareness amongst school and college pupils.

équipbaie métalexpo 2010: What the architects say

The équipbaie métalexpo 2010 conference programme will not only offer architects the chance to stay abreast of the developments in regulations and technologies that will affect their profession over the years to come, it will also give them substantial opportunities to speak. Architects will be presenting ambitious projects (the Architects’ Meetings) or model projects for sustainable development, the integration of photovoltaics into building exteriors, bioclimatic design, the gaining of low consumption building (BBC) and Minergy P labels...

At the show you will have the opportunity to engage directly with participating architects, but until then here are a few comments from architects who will be taking part in the conferences:

Interview with François PELEGRIN, who will be taking part in the round table “How are construction practices are evolving in response to the Grenelle de l’Environnement [French Environment Initiative]?” at 4.00 p.m., 16th November, and who will also be presenting the “BEST (Solar Energy Service Sector Building) project: rethinking the design of offices around solar energy” at 10.00 a.m., 19th November.

"The Grenelle takes us back to the fundamentals of our profession, that is to say building intelligently with the climate rather than enduring it. Today it is necessary for the architect to design a building envelope that performs and in which the openings play an important role and one that is at least as important as the insulation of opaque walls. It is important to capture the sun and the heat that it delivers during the periods when one needs it, whilst also to providing protection to avoid having to live in discomfort and without having to resort to airconditioning. And all of this is down to openings.

Besides its thermal properties, the opening is expected to meet numerous other technical requirements: acoustic, the need to be self-cleaning, to reflect or not reflect sunlight, to be discreet, to house all forms of multiple and varied doors and windows. The ability to close openings needs to be taken into account through shutters, roller and sliding blinds... The 2012 Thermal Regulations force designers to think about all of this, about closing at night and comfort during the summer, especially to the south of the Loire.

It is clear that the Grenelle impacts on openings in many ways. Through research contracts with the Fondation Bâtiment Energie, we have drawn up a set of specifications for a simulation tool aimed at architects. It has resulted in a tool that is both very powerful and entertaining, a piece of software called Archiwizard, which reacts in real time and allows you to obtain a thermal balance right from the first sketch and to immediately measure any modification made to the plans. As a result, everything there is to say about the opening can be self-evaluated from the design stage. From this quantitative base grounded in the Thermal Regulations, one can then turn to tackling ideas of visual comfort and working with light to create interiors.

Today, with the Grenelle, building professionals have a major challenge to pick up... A tool like Archiwizard and a well trained architect will not be enough, because it is essential to train all those involved in the chain and especially the companies."

At 2.00 p.m., 17th November, Vincent RIGASSI, architect, will present the wood-framed passive social housing of the commune of La Terrasse (Isère).

"Two years ago I was responsible for a programme of wood-framed passive social housing in the commune of La Terrasse (38). This already complied with the Minergie-P label.

To achieve this we had to design a relatively innovative envelope. In fact, the questions associated with the envelope play an important role in achieving good thermal performance.

There is currently a great deal of thought being devoted to the façade and to changes in systems for its construction, such as, for example, the positioning of the openings and the glazing. It is also important to manage the interfaces of frames, both at the design stage and on site. To do so, it is necessary to be able to discover the existing products, the various methods of installation and also the other parties involved (manufacturers and installers) in order to feed back to them our expectations and needs in the light of the experience gained. For me équipbaie métalexpo is at one and the same time a place for observing far reaching changes in a market, for discovering new products and also for meetings and exchanges."

Jérôme BOU, architect with Chabanne et Partenaires, will speak at 12 noon, 18th November to present the “Photovoltaic facing and metal grid for the new IUT in Béziers” project.

"The façade is an essential element in the architectural treatment of a project. It is its ’shop window’. The choice of the materials and the glazed surface that form it is therefore crucial. What’s more, the façade is a very interesting structure with which to respond effectively to the demands of sustainable development. The Béziers IUT is being given an ’energy façade’, and is an example of this.

Work has just begun and it has a very strong identity thanks two original façades. A north one, which is a ’network façade’ faced with a fine metal grid that symbolizes the communication technologies taught at the IUT and a southern one, the ’energy façade’, which is covered by 175 m2 of photovoltaic solar panels. This is the equivalent of a volleyball court and demonstrates the intention that the building should contribute towards sustainable development.

Given the new environmental regulations and our desire to innovate in this area, we need to learn about the latest new products in terms of their thermal, acoustic and solar protection performance... This show offers the opportunity for architects to discover new trends that will be useful in their day to day work of designing projects and bringing them to fruition."

Thierry ROCHE, architect, will speak at 3.30 p.m., 18th November 2010 to present the “Solère Centre (St Priest, Rhône): a bioclimatic façade for a positive energy service sector building”.

"The project to be presented at the conference on 18th November relates to the ’cité de l’environnement’, a positive energy building whose energy production covers all its and its users requirements. It houses an environmental expertise centre (architects, town planners, design offices, doctors, manufacturers...) and it has therefore needed to employ a range of solutions to improve its performance. So far as the openings and the façades are concerned, the use of triple glazing, shutters and automatic mechanisms required a great deal of care over the selection of products and their installation.

Today, façades play multiple roles. They provide insulation, air tightness; they allow air in and out, they provide light, they are dynamic, healthy, energy producing... as well as being a source of extravagance and generosity! In the face of the environmental challenges, the creativity of the manufacturers now calls for a real exchange with the designers. équipbaie métalexpo is a place where one can discover the explosion of new solutions that allow façades to play an active role in the optimization of performance whilst at the same time delivering truly astonishing aesthetic choices."

équipbaie métalexpo 2010: What the exhibitors say:

René Lebenthal, Director Warema France

Warema took part in the show in 2008 and I believe that, to be effective, this kind of action needs to be sustained. The 2010 équipbaie métalexpo should be different from the 2008 one, given the economic situation and the requirements of the Grenelle, which are boosting the search for performance and energy savings. Over this period, which is highly favourable to the search for enhanced performance, we are intensifying our show communications in order to demonstrate the important role and the ever greater effectiveness of solar protection in a well managed modern building. The level of technical solutions being shown has advanced considerably in relation to the expected requirements, whether it be for new builds or renovation, and this should have a very favourable impact on the development of our headline product, the sun shield. We will also be presenting innovations in this field which should establish themselves through a significant breakthrough by the sun shield and through the gaining of significant market share

Frédérique Finiti-Broisin, Marketing and Communications Director of Somfy

Because équipbaie métalexpo is THE specialist show serving the core of our business, that is windows, façades, solar protection, shutters blinds and doors and their automatic mechanisms, it is a unique opportunity for us to introduce our new products and services for 2011 for both the residential and the service sectors in conjunction with our exhibiting customers. Furthermore, numerous new products are making their appearance on the Somfy stand, including, in particular, new services that allow everybody to benefit from high performance automatic mechanisms combining energy saving and the comfort of the occupant whatever the size or complexity of the building

At the 2010 show we hope to welcome numerous visitors and potentially new contacts in the fields of installation, energy performance and specification. Through our range of products we want to bring joy to the eyes of our partners and prospects and to give them even more ideas and reasons to develop the value of what they offer through automatic mechanisms.

Jacques Aussibal, Show Manager for Hydro Building Systems Group France (Technal / Alumafel)

For the Hydro Building Systems Group, équipbaie métalexpo and Batimat are the two events that punctuate a highly targeted show strategy. If Batimat mainly allows one to reach specifiers, équipbaie métalexpo is the vital French show for all the professionals involved in aluminium frames, verandas, shutters and blinds… It is the opportunity for us to present the products we are marketing that satisfy the developments in the regulations in the trade, whether these be thermal, acoustic or related to handicapped persons. This year, visitors will be able to discover what two of our units will be offering on the sands of Technal and Alumafel, a brand that joined the group almost two years ago. As with every équipbaie métalexpo, we hope that the wealth of contacts will generate even more high quality meetings with our customers and prospects.

As a real observatory of our profession, this show also allows us to discover what our competitors are offering, to have discussions with the professionals about their needs and so to encourage the development of new products that reflect market expectations.

Stefano Montolli, Marketing Manager of Marcegaglia

The position of Marcegaglia as the leader in the construction market for insulating panels is well known due in large part to its presence at the major international construction shows. It is important for our range of panels for sectional doors, which is aimed at both the industry and the residential sectors, to be present at a specialist trade show such as équipbaie métalexpo.

Last year we substantially consolidated our production of insulating panels for sectional doors, both in terms of market presence and the range of finished products. We think that équipbaie métalexpo today represents the best opportunity in the French market to raise the profile of our company. It is also a real forum for exchanges and meetings between manufacturers and resellers.

équipbaie métalexpo 2010... a show packed with new products

Following on from the 1st wave of new products unveiled in June, a second wave of 98 new products will be unveiled at the show (see the enclosed presentation on the CD providing technical information and visuals).
