Saint-Gobain Technical Fabrics Europe® has registered two ETICS product brands to improve traceability on glass fibre mesh fabrics PDF Imprimer Envoyer

SAINT-GOBAIN Technical Fabrics Europe

External Thermal Insulation Composition Systems (ETICS) were invented over 30 years ago in Germany and are becoming increasingly widespread. Developed to respond to the growing demand for insulation, ETICS provide a significant benefit for the environment and contribute to reducing energy costs.

Saint-Gobain Technical Fabrics Europe® is the world leader in glass fibre mesh fabric for ETICS and covers 35 per cent of the European market. Saint-Gobain's extensive experience in glass manufacture has resulted in almost 50 extra-tough, rot-resistant and hygienic glass fibre products. These products have become the subject of a growing number of imitations due to a lack of international standards. This situation prompted Saint-Gobain to register two brand names for the European Union with the objective of protecting the quality of its fibre mesh products and guaranteeing greater traceability internationally.

SGTF Europe® glass fibre mesh: the reference in ETICS
Glass fibre is the core component for ETICS, providing both reinforcement and dimensional stability. Glass fibre mesh is used to reinforce the plaster coating and has the added advantage of preventing cracking on other ETICS layers, not to mention eliminating the possibility of leaks. The quality of the glass fibre mesh is imperative to guarantee the performance levels and aspect of the entire ETICS system.

The range of approximately 50 glass fibre mesh products developed by Saint-Gobain Technical Fabrics Europe® for ETICS applications are manufactured from boroaluminosilicate glass using silicon fibres and roving. Leaders in their field, these products are used in more than 35 per cent of ETICS systems available worldwide, in both renovations and new constructions. Approved by various bodies, including the CSTB, the glass fibre mesh products also comply with ETA guidelines 004, which further guarantees their quality.

Glass fibre mesh for ETICS: a need for standards
The Austrian standard ONORM B334 is the only existing form of certification that ensures the traceability of glass fibre mesh for ETICS. The Austrian standard identifies manufacturers by attributing a colour coding system to differentiate between the fibres used by each manufacturer.

However, this certification system is not applicable outside Austria, with the result that poor-quality imitations are starting to inundate international markets. This phenomenon is particularly prevalent in China and the ex-USSR and poses a serious threat to the quality and reputation of products manufactured by Saint-Gobain Technical Fabrics Europe.

Two Saint-Gobain Europe brands have been registered to improve traceability
In the interests of protecting the group's knowledge base and improve traceability internationally for its glass fibre mesh products, Saint-Gobain Technical Fabrics Europe registered in March 2007 two French brands for Europe: Coated Glass Fabrics 1-2-1-2-1 n°06/3467325 and Coated Glass Fabrics 1-4-1-4-1 n°06/3467326. The numbers after the brand (1-2-1-2-1 and 1-4-1-4) refer to the sequence of coloured fibres used to identify the manufacturer (1 coloured fibre, 2 white fibres, 1 coloured fibre, 2 white fibres, etc). The two registered brands are a guarantee of quality and should provide on-going protection against imitations.

The opposition period closed on 12 March without any objections and the INPI (French patents office) did not find any objections to the two brands, which were registered this month. The registered brands will provide an additional guarantee as to the quality of the Saint-Gobain Technical Fabrics Europe® range, which continues to be a priority for the company. They are also testimony to Saint-Gobain Technical Fabrics Europe® pioneering spirit.

Saint-Gobain Technical Fabrics-Construction (turnover of 350 million euros, 1,100 employees) is a division of the Saint-Gobain group. Saint-Gobain Technical Fabrics-Construction specialises in the production and sale of glass mats and fabrics for the building industry (waterproofing membranes, surfacing mats, etc.) and DIY sector (shingle, joint tape, and decorative wall and ceiling coverings, etc.) The Euromur subsidiary specialises in wall coverings.
