Forum Discussion: Accutane 40mg - Is It Right for Me?

    Post by LilyLash:

Hey everyone! I've been dealing with really bad acne for years now and my dermatologist suggested that I try Accutane. They prescribed me a dosage of 40 mg, but to be honest, I'm pretty nervous about starting it. Does anyone have experience with this? What are the pros and cons?

    Reply by DermFanatic:

Hi LilyLash! First off, I totally understand your concern; Accutane is indeed quite powerful and can come with some side effects. But it’s also incredibly effective for severe acne that doesn’t respond to other treatments.

Pros:1. Long-Lasting Results: Many people who take Accutane see their skin clear up after a few months of treatment, and the improvements tend to be long-lasting.2. Quality of Life Improvement: Clearer skin can dramatically improve your confidence and mental health.

Cons:1. Side Effects: You'll likely experience dry skin, lips, and eyes; some people also report joint pain or muscle aches.2. Potential Risks: There are serious potential risks like birth defects if you're pregnant while on Accutane, so make sure to use reliable contraception.

The 40 mg dosage is quite standard for many patients, but it can be adjusted depending on how your body responds and the severity of your acne. Make sure to follow up closely with your dermatologist to monitor any side effects or concerns you might have.

Hey LilyLash! DermFanatic gave some great points. I wanted to add that Accutane can be a bit of an adjustment period at first, but for me, it was absolutely worth it in the end. My skin cleared up after about four months and has stayed clear ever since.

I had to use lip balm and moisturizer religiously, which is annoying but not too hard once you get into a routine. And yes, birth control is crucial if there's any chance of pregnancy because Accutane can cause severe fetal abnormalities. Just make sure you’re prepared for the commitment it takes, both in terms of dosage schedule and follow-ups with your doctor.

Thanks so much, DermFanatic and SunShineSkin! Your experiences really help put things into perspective. I guess the next step is to start following up closely with my dermatologist and see how this works out. Any tips on managing side effects?

You're welcome, LilyLash! Managing side effects is definitely important:

    1. Moisturize: Keep your skin hydrated. Look for gentle, fragrance-free moisturizers to use multiple times a day.
    2. Eye Drops: If your eyes get dry or irritated, over-the-counter artificial tears can help.
    3. Lip Balm: Use lip balm with SPF (like Vaseline) throughout the day and before bed.
    4. Dietary Considerations: Some people find that certain foods can exacerbate symptoms, so try to maintain a balanced diet.

And definitely stay in close contact with your dermatologist; they may adjust your dosage or prescribe additional treatments if you experience any troublesome side effects.

Absolutely, SkincareSage's advice is spot-on. And just remember that while Accutane can be intense at first, the benefits often outweigh the initial discomfort for many people. I’d also recommend keeping a journal of how your skin changes and any side effects you experience so you have an accurate record to discuss with your dermatologist during follow-ups.

Good luck with your treatment, LilyLash! You’ll probably find that once you get past those first few weeks, things will start looking up.
