Forum Title: Prednisone for Dogs: UK Purchase Advice

    Post by Paws4Life (12:37 PM):

    Hi everyone,

I'm really struggling with finding the right information on purchasing prednisone for my dog. He has been prescribed this medication due to some skin allergies, but I keep running into roadblocks when trying to buy it online from UK-based pharmacies. Can anyone share their experience or advice? Thanks in advance!

    Hello Paws4Life,

I'm a vet and can definitely help with some guidance here. It's important to know that obtaining prescription medication like prednisone for your pet should always be done under the supervision of a veterinarian. In the UK, this typically means having a valid prescription from a registered veterinary practitioner.

When purchasing online, make sure the pharmacy is legitimate and regulated by organizations such as the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). Look for their official website or search for them on the GPhC's register to verify they are licensed to dispense medicines. Also, ensure that they require a valid prescription before supplying prednisone.

Do you have any specific pharmacies in mind? I can help vet them if needed!

Thanks so much for your reply, VetDoc91! This is very helpful. Currently, I was looking at PharmacyUK and MedsOnlineExpress. Have you heard of these before?

    Post by VetDoc91 (05:17 PM):

    Hi Paws4Life,

I'm glad to hear that the advice was useful. Regarding PharmacyUK and MedsOnlineExpress, I would recommend checking both against the GPhC register as mentioned earlier. It's crucial for their legitimacy.

Additionally, you should ensure that these pharmacies will only dispense prednisone based on a valid prescription from your vet. Prednisone is classified as a prescription-only medication in the UK, meaning it cannot be legally sold without a prescription.

If possible, discuss with your local veterinarian about obtaining the prescription and see if they have any recommendations for reliable online pharmacies that comply with veterinary standards and regulations.

Do let me know how things go!

Thanks again, VetDoc91! I'll definitely check them out on the GPhC register. My local vet has been fantastic but unfortunately, they don't offer online prescribing services. Would it be acceptable to take a photo of my dog's prescription and send that over? Or would you recommend something else?

    Post by VetDoc91 (07:31 PM):

    Hi Paws4Life,

Taking a photo of the prescription and sending it via email or another secure method is generally acceptable, as long as both the veterinary practice and the online pharmacy agree to this. Ensure that the pharmacy accepts this form of submission and verify their security measures for handling sensitive information.

Alternatively, you could ask your vet if they can send the prescription directly to a trusted online pharmacy on your behalf. This might add an extra layer of assurance regarding compliance with regulations.

Remember, it's crucial to ensure both parties (your vet and the pharmacy) are comfortable with this arrangement to avoid any complications or legal issues.

Let me know if you have further questions or need more advice!

Thanks so much for all your help, VetDoc91! I'll reach out to my vet and see about sending the prescription directly. Fingers crossed everything goes smoothly from here.
