Forum: North Harbour Pharmacy Propecia Discussion Thread
Posted by: HealthyLiving82Hi everyone,
I have recently started taking Propecia from North Harbour Pharmacy to help with hair loss. I've been using it for a few weeks now and I'm starting to see some changes, but I also have some concerns. Has anyone else had experience with this? How long did you take the medication before seeing any results? And are there any side effects that I should be aware of?
Thank you!
Posted by: DrMedic89Hello HealthyLiving82,
Thanks for reaching out. It's great to hear that you're starting to see some changes! Propecia (finasteride) is a medication commonly prescribed to treat male pattern baldness and can also help in growing hair.
Regarding your questions:- Results: Typically, it takes about 3-6 months before most patients start noticing significant results. Some may notice improvements sooner, but the full effects often become visible after several months.- Side Effects: Propecia is generally well-tolerated, but some potential side effects include reduced libido and erectile dysfunction. These are relatively rare and usually subside once you stop taking the medication.
If you're concerned about any side effects or have further questions, it might be a good idea to reach out to your doctor for a more personalized discussion.
Best of luck on your hair restoration journey!

That's really helpful. I was also wondering if there are any specific lifestyle changes or other treatments that can complement Propecia? For example, should I be using a different type of shampoo or taking supplements?
Also, what about the long-term use of Propecia? Is it safe to continue it for years?
Posted by: DrMedic89You're welcome HealthyLiving82!
- Complementary Treatments: In addition to Propecia, you might consider using a minoxidil topical solution (like Rogaine) as this can sometimes enhance the effects of finasteride. Additionally, maintaining a healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals can support overall hair health. There isn't strong evidence that any specific shampoo or supplement directly promotes hair regrowth, but staying well-nourished is beneficial for your overall health.
- Long-Term Use: Propecia is generally considered safe for long-term use when taken under the supervision of a healthcare provider. It's important to have regular check-ins with your doctor to monitor how you're responding to the medication and discuss any concerns.
Remember, hair loss can be multifactorial, so addressing other potential factors (like stress or underlying health conditions) might also help in managing your hair loss effectively.
Feel free to ask more questions if you need further clarification!
Posted by: HealthyLiving82Thanks a lot DrMedic89,
I'll make sure to follow up with my doctor and consider using minoxidil as well. It's good to know that there are other options available to complement Propecia.
Would it be beneficial to get some blood tests done to ensure I'm not missing out on any essential nutrients? And how often should I visit the pharmacy for refills?
Posted by: DrMedic89Absolutely, HealthyLiving82. Getting a few basic blood tests to check your vitamin D levels and iron status can be beneficial since deficiencies in these areas are sometimes linked with hair loss.
Nutritional Tests: A simple blood test for vitamin D and ferritin (a measure of stored iron) might help rule out any underlying nutritional issues.
Pharmacy Refills: Typically, Propecia is prescribed as a long-term treatment. You'll need to visit your pharmacy every 1-2 months for refills. Make sure you have an ongoing prescription from your doctor and discuss the refill schedule with them.
Lastly, always keep open communication with your healthcare provider about how you’re responding to the medication and if there are any changes in your hair growth or overall health that concern you.
Good luck, and take care!
Posted by: HealthyLiving82Thanks again DrMedic89,
Your advice has been really reassuring. I feel more confident moving forward with my treatment plan now. I'll get those blood tests done soon and schedule regular visits to the pharmacy for refills.
