Forum Topic: Canine Doxycycline 100mg - Advice Needed
DogLover42:
Hey everyone, I've been struggling with my dog's skin infection for quite some time now. We've tried several treatments but nothing seems to be working. My vet recently prescribed Doxycycline 100mg capsules. Has anyone here had experience with this medication? How do you administer it? And can you buy it over the counter or is a prescription necessary?
PawsitivePetCare:
Hi DogLover42! I’m glad you posted this question as many pet owners may find themselves in a similar situation. Doxycycline 100mg capsules are commonly used for treating bacterial infections, including skin issues. However, it's important to note that a prescription is usually required from your veterinarian before you can purchase this medication.
DogLover42:
Thank you so much for the quick response PawsitivePetCare! Yes, I was prescribed the medication by my vet. He advised me to give her 100mg twice daily with food. My concern is, how exactly do I give a capsule to a dog? She's not particularly fond of taking any kind of pills.
PawsitivePetCare:
No problem at all! Giving dogs capsules can be tricky but it’s definitely manageable. One common method is to hide the capsule in a small piece of wet food or peanut butter. Just make sure that she swallows the entire capsule and not just chews around it. If your dog isn't fond of this, you might want to consider breaking the capsule open and mixing the contents with her favorite treat or food. Always ensure the medication is fully consumed.
VetDoctor91:
Hello DogLover42, I’m a vet here who happens to be browsing this thread. It's great that your dog has been prescribed Doxycycline for her condition. As PawsitivePetCare mentioned, a prescription is required and it's essential to follow the dosage instructions carefully. If you're having difficulty giving her the medication as a capsule, you can ask your vet if there are any palatable alternatives or liquid formulations available.
DogLover42:
Thank you so much for chiming in, VetDoctor91! That’s incredibly helpful. I think I’ll try hiding it in wet food first and see how she reacts to that. If not, perhaps a change of formulation would be beneficial. Would there be any side effects or precautions we should look out for while on this medication?
VetDoctor91:
Certainly! While Doxycycline is generally well-tolerated, it can cause some side effects such as vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. Make sure to monitor your dog closely during the course of treatment and report any concerning symptoms to your vet immediately. Also, ensure she has plenty of water since this medication can be hard on her kidneys.
PawsitivePetCare:
Absolutely agree with VetDoctor91! It’s also important not to skip doses or stop the treatment before the full course is completed, as doing so can lead to the infection not being fully treated and potentially becoming resistant to antibiotics. Keep up good communication with your vet throughout the process for any adjustments needed.
DogLover42:
Thanks a lot to both of you! I really appreciate all this information. It’s comforting knowing that there are solutions out there, even when it feels overwhelming at times. I’ll keep an eye on my dog and will definitely update her condition here after the treatment course is completed.
