Forum Topic: Purchasing Prednisone for Dogs

    Posted by PawsLover (12:34 PM)

Hello everyone! I’m having trouble finding where to buy prednisone for my dog. My vet has prescribed it but she didn't mention how or where to get it. Does anyone know a reliable place to purchase this medication? Thanks in advance!

Hi PawsLover! It’s really important that you only obtain prescription medications like prednisone from legitimate sources, especially when they’re intended for your pet. The safest and most straightforward way would be to purchase it through the veterinarian who prescribed it or a reputable veterinary pharmacy.

Thanks VetFanatic! That makes sense. I’m just worried about cost since my vet's pharmacy seems quite pricey. Is there any other option?

DogOwner123, that’s a valid concern. Sometimes you can find the medication at human pharmacies if they fill pet prescriptions, but make sure to confirm with them first because policies vary. Another option is online pharmacies—just be extremely cautious and ensure they are legitimate and have good reviews from other pet owners.

I’d recommend checking out some of the larger veterinary pharmacy chains like 1800PetMeds or Chewy.com. They often have competitive prices and a wide range of medications, including prednisone for dogs. Just remember to enter your vet's prescription details accurately.

Thanks HappyTails! I’ll check those out. VetFanatic, would you recommend using human pharmacies or online veterinary pharmacies?

PawsLover, it really depends on your comfort level and convenience. Human pharmacies can be a good option if they’re willing to fill the prescription and have reasonable prices. Online veterinary pharmacies offer the benefit of potentially lower costs due to competition and no brick-and-mortar overheads, but make sure to read reviews and confirm their legitimacy.

I’ve heard that some online stores might not be legitimate or could sell counterfeit drugs. How do I know for sure if an online pharmacy is trustworthy?

DogOwner123, great question! Always check the website for a clear and visible license number from your state's board of pharmacy. Look for reviews and testimonials from other pet owners. It’s also wise to see if the online pharmacy has a phone number or email where you can contact them directly with questions about their services.

Thanks everyone! I’ll make sure to be cautious when looking for my dog's prednisone. VetFanatic, do you have any advice on how often the vet should check my dog while he’s on this medication?

    Replied by VetFanatic (5:13 PM)

PawsLover, that's a good point! Regular follow-ups with your veterinarian are crucial when your pet is on prednisone. The vet will want to monitor for any side effects and adjust the dosage if necessary. Typically, they might schedule checkups every 2-4 weeks depending on the severity of the condition being treated.

One more tip, PawsLover! Always ask your vet about the specific instructions for administering prednisone. Dogs can sometimes experience side effects like increased thirst and appetite or even mood changes, so keeping an eye out for these signs is important.
